Abstract
There has been a growing demand for fitting aftermarket devices onto motorcycle helmets. This study aimed to determine whether mounting such a device onto motorcycle helmets increases the risk of injury to the wearer in the event of a crash. A series of oblique impact, energy attenuation and punch tests were conducted to simulate the risks of injuries associated with fitting those devices. The results indicated that, in some cases, attaching such a device increases the risk to a rider of sustaining injuries, which causes the helmet to become non-complying with the relevant standards.
