From preventing problem behaviours to catering for errors: WA road safety progress, aspirations and research.
In 2008, the Western Australian Government set a bold aspiration to achieve a 40% reduction in serious road trauma by 2020. For 2030 a target reduction of between 50 and 70% has been set on a journey to “zero” by 2050.
Where have we made progress? Where are the challenges and opportunities going forward? How has research contributed and what do we need in the future?
In this presentation, Iain will summarise the road safety results achieved in WA between 2008 and 2020 under the Towards Zero Strategy, where the gains have been made and outline the current situation/trends and the challenges and opportunities to 2030. Iain will discuss the contributions from research and identify some of the enduring questions requiring more understanding that will assist implementation of programs including scaling up, use of technology and culture and social change.
With over 70% of serious crashes now not involving speeding, drink driving and not wearing seatbelts it’s time for a paradigm shift in our understanding, culture and our approach if we are to achieve further ambitious improvements by 2030.
